LA VIE EN ROSE delves into the far-from-rosy life of Edith Piaf, the 1930s French chanteuse who sang of love's joys and sorrows so completely and convincingly that she became a household name.

Beautifully filmed and grippingly told, this biopic takes viewers to the mean streets of early 20th-century Paris, where Piaf was born and grew up.It was dangerous and intoxicating, charming and dirty -- a lesson in contradictions.

As played by Marion Cotillard, Piaf is complicated and compelling, the stuff of legend.Burdened by a punishingly painful life -- abandoned by a mother who also wanted to sing, barely cared for by a circus-performer father who likely didn't know any better, raised partly by prostitutes in a brothel, used by pugilistic boyfriends, discovered by a nightclub owner who then is killed, heartbroken by the death of a child, hobbled by an addiction to morphine, dead at 47 had little to celebrate except for her enormous, wondrous voice.

So when one of her few chances at true happiness -- true love with boxer Marcel Cerdan (Jean-Pierre Martins) -- is dashed forever when he dies in a plane crash, it's nothing short of devastating. And then, of course, there's her music, which aptly takes center stage. "Non, je ne regrette rien," she sings ("I regret nothing"), and how noble, how sad those words seem.

A precocious eleven-year-old girl Akeelah Anderson from south los Angeles is discovered to have a talent for words.

In spite of the objection of her mother enters a spelling contest .

Her gift takes her to compete in the national spellig bee the most famous competiton of its kind in the world.

On the way she is helped by a forthright mysterious teacher Dr Larabee and other members of her community.
